Mr. Underwood received his training from Tulsa School of Ballet, Ballet Hispanico in New York City, and American Ballet Theatre. He began his professional career as an apprentice with Tulsa Ballet before joining Texas Ballet Theater. He later danced as a Principal Dancer with Oregon Ballet Theatre and with Ballet West, where he was a featured dancer on the hit WB television series Breaking Pointe. Mr. Underwood first joined Oklahoma City Ballet in 2009, and returned to the company in 2014. He has performed the leading male roles in much of ballet’s standard repertoire, including Giselle, Coppelia, Swan Lake, and George Balanchine’s Apollo. His contemporary repertoire includes works by Trey McIntyre, Nicolo Fonte, James Kudelka, Val Caniparoli, and Jiří Kylián, among others. He has enjoyed numerous opportunities as a guest artist, most notably with the critically acclaimed South African Ballet Theatre, dancing the role of Prince Florimund inThe Sleeping Beauty. With Oklahoma City Ballet, he has performed Principal roles in The Nutcracker, Giselle, Paquita, Balanchine’s Valse Fantasie, Gerald Arpino’s Light Rain, and new works by Jessica Lang, Helen Pickett, Matthew Neenan, and Robert Mills. Mr. Underwood also serves as a Ballet Master for Oklahoma City Ballet.
