FOUR BALLETS CREATED IN THE UNITED STATES BY AMERICAN CHOREOGRAPHERS
Jessica Lang – To Familiar Spaces in Dream
Artistic Director Robert Mills first brought Pennsylvania-born and New York City-based choreographer Jessica Lang to Oklahoma City to create a world premiere in 2011. Since then, Lang has become one of the most sought-after choreographers today, creating works for some of the most respected companies in the world, including American Ballet Theatre, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, National Ballet of Japan, and Joffrey Ballet. We are pleased to bring you one of her signature works, the surreal and lush To Familiar Spaces in Dream.
Nicolo Fonte – World Premiere
Brooklyn-born choreographer Nicolo Fonte is known for his daring and original approach to dance. Oklahoma City Ballet audiences last saw his work in 2012 when our company debuted his stunning creation, Left Unsaid. His work has been noted by critics around the world for its unique movement language as well as a highly-developed fusion of ideas, dance, and design. This is his first original work created on Oklahoma City Ballet.
Jerome Robbins – 2 & 3 Part Inventions
With live piano accompaniment
Jerome Robbins is considered one of the greatest American-born choreographers of his generation. His storied career spanned the world of ballet as Associate Artistic Director of New York City Ballet, and the world of Broadway as choreographer for numerous Broadway productions including West Side Story. One of the last works Robbins created, 2 & 3 Part Inventions was finished in 1994 for New York City Ballet. This is Oklahoma City Ballet’s first work from Mr. Robbins.
Bryan Pitts –Variations for Six
With live music
Former Oklahoma City Ballet Artistic Director and North Carolina native Bryan Pitts created Variations for Six when he was Ballet Master for Dallas Ballet in 1983. Using the complex Igor Stravinsky Duo Concertant score for piano and violin, four dancers join the two musicians on stage to create an energizing, yet romantic neo-classical ballet that reflects Mr. Pitts’ time spent in New York City Ballet. We are pleased to bring back one of his earliest works to celebrate the life and legacy of the choreographer who led our company for more than 20 years.
